Aphex Twin fans rejoiced this week as he announced his new album SYRO (his first as Aphex Twin for thirteen years) via the deep web – what it will sound like is anybody’s guess… It reached #11 in the UK album charts, a remarkable feat for an album that clocks in at over two and a half hours long and is made up entirely of eerie, barely-there electronic soundscapes. But it was Selected Ambient Works Volume II, his first album on Warp, that was his most commercially successful record. From the acid-techno of his 1992 debut Selected Ambient Works 85-92 to the abrasive drum’n’bass and creaking, minimal piano of 2001’s Drukqs, his work was constantly challenging and always unpredictable.
